Lunch at Bab al Shams652 mol gekuckt ginnIt's great to eat outdoors -- something we don't do that often in England. Marjorie enjoying lunch on our first day at Bab al Shams, in the desert.

Burj al Arab Hotel932 mol gekuckt ginnThis is the "sail" portion of the Burj al Arab Hotel, made from Kevlar. It is lit in various changing colours at night. Here it's in its purple mode.

Bab Al Shams Desert Resort - Dubai1578 mol gekuckt ginnOn the morning of our departure, the front desk manager called Marjorie outside to show her the rising sun. [url=http://www.jumeirahbabalshams.com/]Bab Al Shams[/rl] means Gate of the Sun, and we could see why the hotel got its name.

Burj al Arab Hotel -- Dubai9858 mol gekuckt ginnPhotographed from the beach at the Madinat Jumeirah. The Burj al Arab -- Tower of the Arabs -- rises above the Arabian Sea, and was built to look like a sail. The right side of the hotel is made from Kevlar, the bullet-proof material. Look at the crowd on the beach.

Craig and Marjorie Before Dinner1010 mol gekuckt ginnI just held the camera out with one hand and pressed the shutter. My foot really hurt on this whole trip, but if we didn't take the trip ("bought" with British Airways miles) by December 1, we were told we'd lose it. So I took golf carts everywhere, or sat by the pool. Easy, peasy in Dubai.
burj-lobby.jpg
Atrium of Burj al Arab Hotel5162 mol gekuckt ginnPhotographed from the lower lobby, looking up through the fountains and the large gold columns. They love gold in the Burj al Arab!
burj-breakfast.jpg
Breakfast at the Burj al Arab Hotel5225 mol gekuckt ginnMarjorie having breakfast. We were surrounded by plants from Hawaii (or from tropical islands) like the naupaka. The poor things were struggling: I suspect the humidity is too low in Dubai, or it's too hot -- or both.
burj-bar.jpg
Burj al Arab Cocktail Lounge5046 mol gekuckt ginnThis colourful cocktail lounge actually sticks out from near the top of the Burj al Arab hotel. So we were actually hundreds of feet above the Arabian Sea.
